Dover Downs Hotel & Casino Helps Clean the World

Dover Downs Hotel & Casino has partnered with Orlando-based social enterprise Clean the World to collect and recycle hotel soaps, shampoos, conditioners, lotions and gels to help fight the global spread of preventable diseases.

The soaps collected by Dover Downs Hotel & Casino will be shipped to Clean the World for recycling and distribution to communities and countries in greatest need through the efforts of Clean the World Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization.

Clean the World is the largest global recycler of hotel amenities. In just three years of operation the charitable and philanthropic Clean the World Foundation has distributed more than 11 million bars of soap to children and families in the United States, Haiti and more than 55 countries worldwide.

Dover Downs Hotel & Casino has a total of 500 rooms and is projected to provide nearly 45,000 bars of soap and bottled amenities – more than three tons – to Clean the World annually, which is enough to provide hygiene supplies and comfort for thousands of children and families worldwide each year. AAA Four Diamond rated Dover Downs Hotel & Casino is the largest hotel in Delaware and one of only five hotels in the State to participate in the Clean the World initiative.

Each day 9,000 children around the world die from diseases such as acute respiratory illness and diarrheal diseases that can be prevented by washing with bar soap. Clean the World has a mission to put soap in the hands of people who need it most to improve hygiene and sanitation conditions.

“We are proud to continue to be aggressive in implementing programs that ensure energy and recycling sustainability practices throughout our property,” said Ed Sutor, president and CEO of Dover Downs Hotel & Casino. “These measures have allowed us to reduce waste in landfills and conserve energy, which ultimately reduces our overall impact on the environment. Allowing our unused soaps to be
distributed by Clean the World to those who would not otherwise have access to them is a win for all of us and the right thing to do.”

Dover Downs Hotel & Casino unveiled in October 2011 its newest phase of their sustainability program, providing for the sorting of recyclable and non-recyclable materials (of approximately 192 tons annually). The program is reducing the company’s impact on the landfill by more than 50%. The company also recently completed the first step of the Green Concierge Certification Program, developed by Hospitality Green, New York, which provides a third–party audit for performance-based improvements. All of these efforts are coupled with an energy saving program that began in 2006 when they partnered with Seiberlich Trane to create and implement a companywide energy savings plan.

Clean the World has partnered with 1,500 hotel properties in North America to provide soaps and bottled amenities to people in need. While doing so, the organization has also fulfilled a valuable environmental mission by diverting an estimated 1.5 million lbs. (750 tons) of hotel waste from polluting landfills in the United States and Canada.

“Our hotel partners are the driving forces behind our global hygiene revolution,” says Shawn Seipler, CEO at Clean the World. “By making a commitment to sustainable, socially responsible programs in the hospitality industry, partners such as Dover Downs Hotel & Casino are using the leftover resources of soaps and bottled amenities to help save lives. Together, we are turning trash into treasure every single day.”

Clean the World Foundation has a mission to provide soap where needed to help improve hygiene and sanitation conditions, to lessen the impact of disease, and to promote better hygiene and living conditions worldwide.
